James McBey, Scottish (1883-1959)
The Sussex, etching and drypoint, 1916. Hardie 171. Edition of 76. 8 1/4 x 15 3/16 inches. Signed in ink. The SS Sussex was a passenger ferry that was struck by a torpedo from a German U-Boat. McBey’s etching depicts the boat after it had been beached near Boulogne. Hardie described this as “one of the noblest, most spiritual of his plates”. On 19th century wove paper.
